Areas of Special Interest - Manitoba

Frequently anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: Areas of Special Interest - Manitoba

Abstract:

The boundaries of this layer were delineated using the best available maps. The layer includes all or parts of lands in Manitoba selected as Areas of Special Interest including proposed ecological reserves, unprotected wildlife management areas and other candidate protected areas. Areas of Special Interest are selected to represent the enduring features found within a natural region that still need to be captured to achieve adequate representation. These are study areas for discussion purposes and they are not protected in any formal manner.

Supplemental_Information:

This boundary is not to be used as a legal definition. In most cases boundaries are flexible and can be changed to respond to new information.

  1. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

Date: 07-Feb-2006 (process 1 of 25)

The boundaries of this layer were delineated using the best available digital base data at the time. A geodatabase was created with the existing heading and data structure originating from the 2005 Manitoba Areas of Special Interest boundary layer. Those headings and structures were then adjusted to meet Conservation Area Reporting and Tracking System (CARTS) standards, and further manipulated to conform with a Disk Operating System (DOS) based naming system of no more than 8 characters. A new Areas of Special Interest Schema was created based on input from the Protected Areas Initiative, and the previous Areas of Special Interest layer from 2005 was loaded into the geodatabase with the appropriate fields matched to their new current fields.
